Overview

The Fresh Market (TFM) currently has an opening for a Category Manager in Produce Procurement at our Corporate Offices in Greensboro, North Carolina.  This role is responsible for managing all of the mechanical processes in Produce with regard to the back of the house.   The details of buying, aging of product, out of stocks, credit activity, order accuracy, and the wholesale process will fall under the umbrella of this CM. The goal of this position will be to communicate effectively with our vendors and growers through accurate and meaningful analysis to improve unadjusted fill rates, condition, and quality, and to improve the profitability of the stores’ Produce departments.

Responsibilities

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in retail chain produce buying, category management, and distribution experience
  • 2-3 years of experience Produce retail merchandising
  • Strong analytical and computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Micro Strategy, various purchasing software
  • Excellent communication skills dealing with a variety of people on all levels including growers, shippers, third party distributors, quality assurance, retail managers, and others
  • Thrive in a collaborative work environment
  • Passion to teach and train others
  • Strong presentation skills both written and oral
  • Focused attention to detail
  • Proven track record with margin achievement at the retail or wholesale level
  • Effective negotiation skills with growers and shippers
  • QA experience and Technical Food Safety requirements preferred

 

Specific Duties:

This position while involved with the Procurement side of the business, will work closely with the Retail side and the QA team to ensure that all product specs meet TFM guidelines. Accuracy with regard to the item inventory levels, product freshness, OOS, distributions, secondary vendor relationships, and spec adherence to support the store schematics is a function of this position.

  • Continual communication and relationship building with TFM distribution partners to deliver the best product and the best level of service to TFM stores everyday
  • Negotiating with growers, shippers, and other vendors to procure the best quality product at the best costs
  • Assist with periodic warehouse visits to provide analysis and direction to the each vendor.
  • Truck schedule maintenance and delivery time adherence
  • Credit reporting and vendor integrity reconciliation; reconciliation of credits
  • Insure proper aging guidelines are established and maintained with each distribution center
  • Conduct and maintain cost analysis on supply chain for all categories with regard to In-bound/Out-bound freight, up-charges, credit cost, and FOB pricing accuracy
  • All other activities associated with executing a successful retail focused program
  • All special projects as requested by VP of Merchandising – Produce, Floral, and Gift Center to build or support the stores and their Produce department
